Case Study: Loewen
Here's a story about the custom door and window maker, Loewen. The company underwent a lean management transformation aimed to eliminate waste. However, the people aspect was not initially a focus, leading to a survey that revealed about 80% of the workforce had negative views about work.
Logistics manager Alex Boxhorn took it upon himself to involve his team in finding ways to improve the situation and change workplace culture. The result was a written list of expected behaviors agreed upon by the whole team. He drew ideas from the book "Two Second Lean" by Paul Akers, effectively transforming team members into engaged participants open to sharing ideas.
The culture shifted to one of rapid improvement, with teams documenting their improvements via videos posted to a private YouTube channel, which became a valuable training resource.
Being curious, encouraging new ideas, and embracing change can catalyze remarkable results. Continuous improvement can create invested cheerleaders within a company. This transformation embodies what I refer to as Kaizenjoy!
We’ll be sharing more continuous improvement stories on LinkedIn.
